The star guest of the 2020 Scottish Six Days Trial has been confirmed as past winner and American World Trials Champion, Bernie Schreiber.
As the SSDT returns to Fort William for another year, it welcomes Bernie as the Guest of Honour. Los Angeles-born Schreiber has been riding trials since the age of 10. In the late 70s he influenced the development of a new riding style by adding floating pivot turns and bunny hops and in 1979 he went on to win 4 of the 12 world rounds and became the youngest ever World Champion.
But it was 1982 when Bernie fulfilled his lifelong ambition of winning the Scottish Six Days Trial, which up until that point, and even to today, the event had been won by European riders.
Retiring in 1987 with a record of 20 world wins and 48 podium appearances, it is safe to say that Bernie is no stranger to the sport!
Bernie says “I’m honoured to attend the Scottish Six Day Trial in 2020. It’s a real privilege to be Guest of Honour at the 110th edition which marks my first return to beautiful Fort William since winning the event in 1982 on SWM.
When looking back on the highlights of my trials career, the traditional and historic SSDT event remains the crown jewel in the sport of trials. It was always a test of reliability and lifetime ambition to win the event, but being the first (and still the only non-European to win) holds a special place in my heart.
This year will mark a very happy place to be, with friendly people in a friendly country of tradition and rich trials history. A very special thanks to the Edinburgh & District Motor Club for this invitation and their continued support to the sport of trials.”
Look out for Bernie in and around Parc Ferme, leading the highly anticipated parade through Fort William on Sunday and sending the riders away on the opening day. More announcements to follow.
