1931 Scottish Six Days Trial

In the 1931 Scottish Six Days Trial, the competitors gathered at Alexander’s Garage in Edinburgh on Sunday May 17th where they were examined to verify their state before the start and parts of the machines that it was forbidden to change during the event received a small blotch of yellow paint into which was scratched the riding number.

The event attracted 86 solo, 6 sidecar entries and one Morgan. It was the first year that marks were to be added to the score for ‘footing’ on nominated observed hills as an aid to separating the best performances since the reliability of motorcycles since the outset of the event had significantly improved. It should also be noted that ‘footing’ was not like the way trials are observed today, one mark was lost for prodding to maintain balance, or even running alongside the machine to maintain motion.

The awards comprised silver cups for the first 30% of finishers and the next 20% gold medals. As previously marks could also be lost on time. In 1931, the competitors faced a total of 906 miles over the course of the six days.

The routes for the 1931 Trial were:

First Day - 180 miles

Edinburgh - Camelon - Balloch - Arrochar (lunch) - Inveraray - Ford 0 Kimelfort - Oban.

Second Day - 147 miles

Oban - Taynuilt - Bridge of Orchy - Mamore - Fort William (lunch) - Fort Augustus - Inverness.

Third Day - 200 miles

Inverness - Dingwall - Hive Brae - Jeantown - Tornacress - Applecross (lunch) - Achnashellach - Garve - Drumnadrochit - Balnachree - Balbeg - Abriachan - Inverness.

Fourth Day - 152 miles

Inverness - Carrbridge - Dalwhinnie - Pitlochry (lunch) - Ballinluig - Hudson Hill - Weem - Kenmore - Amulree - Perth.

Fifth Day - 130 miles

Perth - Pitlochry - Kinloch Rannoch (lunch) - Bridge of Balgie - Killin - Lochearnhead - Crieff - Perth.

Sixth Day - 97 miles

Perth - Bridge of Earn - Glenfarg - Dunning - Auchterarder - Dollar - Menstrie - Stirling - Camelon - Falkirk - Linlithgow - Edinburgh.
